June Book Recap & Reccomendations

It's officially July y'all! I can hardly believe it. To think we are half way through 2019 just blows my mind. I need time to slow down!
On a positive note, the end of a month always means it's time for my reading recap! Y'all know these are my favorite posts to read and my favorite to write, so let's dive in.

I didn't get to read as much as I would have liked to this month because of a lot of new things starting, but I did read three totally different books. You can always catch up with my book-related posts here.

I had a friend recommend this book to me and I can so see why she did. Based off of the description, this book sounds right up my alley.

This is the story of Jimmy, a young boy with developmental disabilities and his journey through the end of middle school and start of high school. We learn about his visions, family, and what goes on with "friends" behind closed doors.

Overall, I thought this book was just okay. This book was so character driven that the actual plot was at times boring. Throughout the whole book, nothing that interesting really happened. There were a few times I felt extremely defensive of Jimmy and I did feel attached to him as a character, so I have to give the author props where props are due. This book however, took me a while to get through and lost my interest on multiple occasions.

I loved this authors first two books When Dimple Met Rishi and From Twinkle, With Love. She does such a great job of effortlessly blending Indian culture into young adult romances and it adds a layer of depth to each of her stories.

There's Something about Sweetie is the companion novel to When Dimple Met Rishi and it follows Rishi's brother Ashish and a girl named Sweetie. Sweetie is an overweight track star at her high school with an overbearing mother who is doing everything in her power to make Sweetie loose weight. Ashish is the star basketball player at a different high school who has lost his game (and his mojo) after a devastating heartbreak. When Ashish's parents set him up with Sweetie he is skeptical he can ever truly love again. Sweetie hopes going behind her mother's back will help her prove to herself that she is indeed worthy of love, even if this isn't the real thing.

I loved this book. I don't know if I loved it as much as her other two, but loved none the less. This story is charming, engaging, and just plain sweet. There were some characters that I felt the story could have done without, but I won't get into that. Overall, I think this is a fun summer book to read and I think you will enjoy it!

I have been talking about this book so much after I pre-ordered it and I couldn't wait to read it when it arrived last week. Heather Avis is a fierce advocate for her kids (two of which have Down Syndrome) and is passionate about making room in every space, for those who are different.

I was hoping this book would be more about actionable ways to be inclusive to others and less about motherhood. I am not a mother yet, so I didn't relate to a good portion of this book, but if you are, I am sure you would love her writing. Regardless, her stories are funny, her testimony is beautiful, and her mission is awesome. There are parts of this book that will ultimately make you want to become defensive and put up a wall, but as Heather says, it's important to sit in the tension and listen.

This book did inspire me to scoot over and make some room in my life for God to work in ways I wouldn't have imagined. My special education heart loves her goals and drive. Love this book!
