February Book Recap & Reviews

Happy Monday! Today is the first day of my Spring Break. I don't have any crazy plans though, because I have to spend most of my time studying for my first teaching certification exam (out of three) that is coming up in a few weeks. Sounds like a wild time right? I won't bore you with the details. Another month has come and gone and I can't wait to share what books I read this month. It was a weird reading month. I hated two and loved two. Let's dine in!

More Than We Can Tell by: Brigit Kemmerer
If you read my January recap, you will know that I loved this authors first book, Letters to the Lost. I couldn't wait to pick up this companion novel which is about one of the characters from that book. You can definitely read this book without reading the other first, but I really recommend reading the first one before this one.

This is about Emma, a gaming girl with an anonymous stalker and fighting parents, and Rev, who we met in this authors first novel. I knew from that book that he was adopted and had been abused by his birth father but wow. This book gave me a whole lot more than I expected. I have to admit I really wasn't a fan of Emma in and couldn't at first get behind her storyline but Rev and the beautiful detail we get into his family and background more than made up for it. By the end I loved both characters and were rooting for both of them. I really recommend this one y'all!

Next Year in Havana by: Chanel Clayton
I have always heard that Reese Witherspoon picks great books for her monthly book club and since this was one of them (and the cover was beautiful) I decided to pick it up. I was SO disappointed with this book. I got about halfway through the book before I had to call a quits. There were a lot of characters that didn't feel that interesting and a whole lot of Cuban politics that weren't told in order or in any way that made sense. Really don't recommend this one.

Amy & Rogers Epic Detour by: Morgan Matson
I seriously LOVE a good Morgan Matson books. She writes great romances that aren't too steamy and always has deep characters with a complicated past. This book is right up there with her other ones for me. I did like that it was a little shorter than her other books at about 300 pages versus 500 which her more recent books seem to be.

This is the story of Amy, who once had a picture perfect family and future ahead of her until an accident in which her father ends up dead. As we read through the book you learn about Amy's involvement in the death of her father and how it tore her family apart. When a friend of her mother sends her son Roger, who is getting over a bad breakup, to drive Amy cross-country to her new home in Connecticut, Amy gets an adventure she wasn't expecting.

This book was full of adventure, traveling, fun characters, and drama. I loved this one and totally want to road trip across the U.S now!

The Flying Circus by: Susan Crandall
I was so excited to read another book by this author because her books Whistling Past the Graveyard, and The Perpetual Myth of Summer were two of my favorites from last year. However this one was such a let down and my heart breaks to say it, but I couldn't finish it. I didn't expect to not finish TWO books this month and it pains me that one was by Crandall, because I have loved her other work but this one was NOT doing it for me.

This book is about three strangers who following The Great War run away together, escaping from their own monsters, to start their own traveling stunt show. Y'all this was so promising at first. By the half way point though, I was still waiting for something more to happen or for their pasts to be revealed but still felt like I didn't know anything about these characters.

I still love you Susan Crandall :(

  1. Totally get what you mean about Havana's politics! That was my least favorite part of the book.
