January Reading Recap & Reviews

We made it through the first month of this year y'all!

Not only did I do quite a bit of reading this month, but I really enjoyed these books. I would recommend most of these to anyone. I love a good reading month like that!!

Rush by: Lisa Patton

This book is about a few sorority girls at Ole Miss, their families, and the black women that work at the sorority house the girls live in.

I LOVED this book! It wasn't as quick of a read as I expected it to be, but I ended up really loving every minute of this book. If you find Greek life entertaining you will love this one. I feel this book could be made into a really great movie similar to The Help. Y'all need to read this one!

A Good Girls Guide to Murder by: Holly Jackson

I decided to pick up this one after seeing it all over my TikTok page. This book is about a high school senior who decides to research a murder that happened in her small town five years ago.

This is a classic who-done-it story that will really have you guessing. I didn't guess the murderer until like two pages before it was revealed. I was so shocked and found the whole book really exciting.

It Ends With Us by: Colleen Hoover

Trigger Warnings: Domestic Abuse, Alcoholism, Depression

I really can't even begin to describe this story. I read it in one day and was absolutely crushed by this story. I don't know if I would really recommend it because it is so sad and scary. This book was very eye opening though and I read it so quick because I had to know what happened next.

Brain on Fire: My Month of Madness by: Susannah Cahalan

This memoir is about a young reporter who suddenly starts acting psychotic and no one really has the answer as to why. For a month she has no recollection of what happened or why she acted the way she did. All she knows, is that she was dying and no one really knew why.

I read this book in ONE NIGHT!! It was an insane story and I can't believe it is true!! I highly recomend this one. (There is also a movie version on Netflix.. but it is not nearly as good as the book).

Redeeming Love by: Francine Rivers

This book is a modern retelling of the book of Hosea from the Bible. Set during the California Gold Rush, Michael feels God has laid on his heart to marry a prostitute. She is haunted by many demons of her past and continues to put his love and faith to the test.

This is my second time reading the book and I think I actually loved it more the second time around, which I didn't think would be possible. This isn't a small book, but the story is just so good and the parallel between Michael's love for Angel and God's redeeming love for us can make me cry every time.

This was recently made into a movie (trailer here) and I really enjoyed it. The movie still isn't as good as the book in my opinion but it was really well done, I thought. It is a very adult book with a lot of brutal subjects so seeing some of that on screen was harsh. Overall though, I think the message was beautiful and I loved it.

FAVORITE BOOK OF ALL TIME!!

Women of the Bible: A One-Year Devotional Study by: Ann Spangler, Jean E. Syswerda

My mom, sister, and I all started this book at the beginning of 2021 and ended it at the beginning of 2022. We all agreed that this was one of the best devotional studies we have ever done. Not only is this author's writing phenomenal, but we loved going through the bible from the perspective of the women.

I learned SO much from this book. There are so many women in the bible that I have never heard a sermon or lesson on and I am surprised. All three of us said we can't believe how crucial women were to Jesus' ministry and yet we don't hear about them nearly as often.

I highly recommend grabbing some girls and working through this devotional together this year. Each day is perfectly laid out and easy to understand. It will challenge you in a lot of ways and I think you will really love it.
