Events of the Bible: Cain and Abel- Weekly Devotion

Weekly Devotion

What we are Learning This Week:
Hello everyone! Last weeks reading was Genesis 4 and this chapter discussed Cain and Abel. Cain and Abel were the children of Adam and Eve. This chapter teaches us that Cain worked the soil and Abel kept flocks. In a long course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord. Abel brought some of the firstborn of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. Abel brought his best for the Lord and Cain only brought left overs after he had plenty for himself. Cain became very angry and killed Abel. He then lied to the Lord about it and the Lord cursed the lands, and said that anyone who kills someone will have seven times the punishment that he received.

Relating it to Your Life:
I know that some of these things that happen are often so hard to understand the relevance so I want to touch on how the many aspects of this story effect us. First of all, don't ever lie to God. He is all knowing and you can't get away with anything. Second, regardless of how jealous you are of someone no matter how severe, you never seek revenge or try to cause them harm or hurt. Third, the Lord was not impressed with what was given to him as an offering but the heart it was given with. Cain didn't have a loving heart and didn't give an offering to the Lord until he was satisfied with all he had. We often do that too. We want to help others and bless those who need more don't we? But what keeps us from serving and giving money or things to those who need it? The fact that we want more or we aren't happy with all we have quite yet. Here is a secret; you are never going to have enough unless you have a content attitude and give to God first. God gives you all that you can handle and we are supposed to bless others with it. Regardless of what you have, it is supposed to be used for the Lords purpose. Regardless of how big this blessing may be, God will be happy if you do it with a loving heart and you are content. That is how Abel was. He gave his firstborn of his flock to the Lord which in case you didn't know, was a huge deal. Abel may or may not have had a lot, but he gave his best of what he had to the Lord with a loving heart.
